This volume is not, strictly speaking, a scientific reader; its aim is simply to provide material suitable for imparting the habit of careful reading and, in a measure, the voe_abulary of scientific literature. Articles of pure science are valuable, indeed, in the hands of teachers familiar with the techniļ calities of the subject treated, but they lay too heavy a' burden upon the average instructor of modern languages, not to speak of the students. Our selections have therefore been made from that branch of writing which, while drawing upon facts and scientific data for material, permits the display of the author's fancy or brightness, and blends instruction with interest.
