Es ist Exner gelungen, das alleinige aufrechte Gesamtbild, wie es im Facettenauge von Lampyris splendidula (leuchtkäfer) gebildet und von dem Gehirn dieses lnsektes zweifellos mehr oder minder deutlich wahrgenommen wird, zu entdecken und zu fixieren. Dieses Bild ist wesentlich deutlicher als das, welches er auf Grund seiner Theorien vermutet hatte, und welches ich selbst im Anfang dieses Buches (taf. I, Fig. 3) abgebildet habe. Wenn nun dies letztere nicht sehr deutlich ist, so darf nicht vergessen werden, dass es ein theo retisch nur von drei Facetten erzeugtes Bild, und zwar eines sehr kleinen Gegenstandes wiedergeben will. Auch möchte ich hier gleich erwähnen, dass Exner selbst seinen Zweifel dariiber ausspricht, ob das lnsekt fähig ist, das betreffende Bild mit derselben Schärfe wahr zunehmen, mit der es von ihm (exner) selbst gesehen und photo graphiert worden ist. Gesetzt selbst, dass dies möglich ist, so ist doch das biologische Experiment allein imstande, uns mit annä hernder Bestimmtheit darüber Auskunft zu geben, was Exner selbst auch vollständig zugibt.
