Excerpt from Aeroplane Designing for Amateurs: A Plain Treatment of the Basic Principles of Flight Engineering Including Heretofore Unpublished Facts Concerning Bird Flight and Aerodynamic Phenomena
Since it is upon knowledge of the laws of fluid movements that all progress in aviation must depend absolutely, it proba bly will be conceded that the only investigations ever made that oner even a well-substantiated claim to the complete formulation of these laws, are entitled to at least such credence as may properly repose in prima facie evi dence and demonstration. And in thus confining him self to explanations based upon the only instances of really exhaustive scientific analysis existing in this field, instead of attempting to correlate the complex and often random and uncertain conclusions of even the most successful empiricists, the author believes that whatever may be lost in the way of a conventional treatment of the subject will be gained in the interest that always attaches to new information.
