This book picks up where its predecessor left off to continue the story of the Council of Trent through Pope Pius IV, who was elected to the position in 1559. The Pope is determined to continue the work of the council even as internal and external forces make this goal a perilous one. Despite pushback from numerous powerful leaders including King Philip II of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand, Pope Pius IV manages to reconvene the council and appoint two legates, with the intent to address significant reforms to the Church.
