Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, first published in the early 19th century, introduces the reader to the field of chronology, the science that determines the order of past events and presents them in a meaningful way. Before the 19th century, chronology had existed as more of an art than a science, relying on tradition and genealogy rather than scientific principles. The author traces the history of chronology to the Greeks, Egyptians, Babylonians and Persians, offering an overview of the modes of reckoning time employed by these ancient peoples. The book highlights the development of chronology within the historical context, exploring the relationship between the science and the need for measuring time as civilizations advanced. In addition, the book presents an in-depth analysis of the various methods of dividing time, including weeks, months, and years, and discusses the complex relationship between astronomical and civil calendars. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Seller Inventory # 9780282389932_0
