Ostfriesland, unter dem tatkraftigen friesischen Bauerngeschlechte der Cirksenas schon im 15. Jahrhundert politisch geeinigt, war schon damals gegen die Provinz Groningen und damit gegen das jetzige Königreich der Niederlande politisch sicher abgegrenzt, ebenso gegen das Münsterland im Süden. Im Jahre 1575 wurde die durchaus künstliche östliche Grenzlinie zwischen Ostfriesland und dem nordlichsten Teile des Herzogtums Oldenburg dern J everlande gezogen, als Maria von Jever, der letzte Sproß aus dern Jeverschen Häuptlingshause der Pa pingas, starb und die hinterlassene Herrschaft Jever ihrem Vetter, dem Grafen von Oldenburg, vererbte. Die so geschaffene politische Ah grenzung Ostfrieslands war damit dauernd festgelegt; denn das in dieser Gestalt abgegrenzte Fürstentum Ostfriesland repräsenüerte sowohl von 1744 - 1815 unter der preußischen Staatszugehörigkeit, als auch von 1815 - 1866 unter welfischem Zepter einen selbständigen Verwaltungs bezirk (fürstentum Ostfriesland oder Landdrostei Aurich.) Auch jetzt noch bildet es als Regierungsbezirk Aurich einen eigenen Bezirk im Verwaltungsdienst der preußischen Provinz Hannover, der mit den In seln und dem 1853 von Oldenburg käuflich erworbenen Gebiet von Wilhelmshaven eine Flache von reichlich 3000 qkm umfaßt.
