Excerpt from The Relative Proportions of the Steam-Engine: Being a Rational and Practical Discussion of the Dimensions of Every Detail of the Steam-Engine
IT is a source of regret to the author of these Lectures that none of the distinguished writers upon Mechanics or the Steam-engine have undertaken to give, in a simple and practical form, rules and formulae for the determination of the relative proportions of the component parts of the steam-engine.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This non-fiction book analyzes the physical formulas, equations, and related concepts that determine the relative proportions and dimensions of the various components and parts of the steam engine. Beyond identifying the optimal dimensions for various components of a steam engine based upon various factors, such as boiler pressure, stroke length, diameter of the steam cylinder, number of strokes per minute, and horsepower, the author also establishes a method of determining the proper relative proportions of the steam cylinder. The book presents a method of computing condensation, or the loss of steam pressure, due to the relative surface exposed and the difference of temperature between exhaust and initial steam, and presents a conclusion regarding the limitations of the expansion of steam in steam engines. The author acknowledges that the application of high rotative speeds in lieu of large engines in order to reduce condensation was not well understood by engineers at the time of his writing.
