Synopsis

Excerpt from Select Works of Porphyry: Containing His Four Books on Abstinence From Animal Food; His Treatise on the Homeric Cave of the Nymphs; And His Auxiliaries to the Perception of Intelligible Natures

We are likewise informed, by the same Eu napius, that Porphyry, when he first associated with Plotinus, bade farewell to all his other preceptors, and totally applied himself to the friendship of that wonderful man. Here he filled his mind with science, as from a perennial and never-satiating fount. But afterwards, being con quered, as it were, by the magnitude of his doc trines, be conceived a hatred of body, and could no longer endure the fetters of mortality.

From the Publisher

The second volume in the Prometheus Trust's Thomas Taylor
Series, this is a quality hardback, sewn, and bound in purple library
buckram with gold blocking. The Prometheus Trust has produced all of the
writings and translations of Thomas Taylor in this classic series, often
adding many useful cross references, standard line numbering, and
explanatory notes. The Series presents the works of Taylor in a clear
modern typeface, and is not a poor quality facsimile editon.

The translator, Thomas Taylor (1858-1835), should be considered as one of
the giants of western philosophy - certainly no modern translator has been
so immersed in thought of ancient Platonic philosophy. He was, it is said,
"a scholar and a mystic" and not only provided the backbone to the American
transcendentalist school, but also inspired the whole English romantic
movement.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the ancient philosophical debate surrounding the consumption of animal flesh. The author meticulously examines the arguments of various schools of thought, including the Stoics, Peripatetics, and Epicureans, presenting their justifications for and against a meatless diet. Through exploring historical and cultural contexts, the book reveals how attitudes towards animal slaughter and consumption have evolved over time. It delves into the ethical considerations, societal implications, and even the practicalities of abstaining from meat, referencing historical figures like Pythagoras and referencing ancient practices like animal sacrifice. By dissecting these diverse perspectives, the book challenges readers to contemplate the deeper significance of their dietary choices and the impact these choices have on themselves, the environment, and the animal kingdom. Ultimately, it invites us to consider whether a life of compassion and non-violence can extend beyond the human realm, prompting a reevaluation of our relationship with the natural world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
