The chaldee language belongs to the Aramaic branch of the great Shemitic family of languages. The Aramaic is so designated fi'om Aram, the ancient name of the dis triet in which the language was native. Aram included those countries which in later times were known as Syria, Mesopotamia, and ib'abylonia. The name belongs to the most remote antiquity, Aram being mentioned as one of the sons of Shem in the table of nations in Genesis (x. The country Spoken of by Homer and Hesiod (il. Ii. 7 88 Theog. Is by many conjectured to be the same as Aram.
