Synopsis

Excerpt from The Art of Pattern-Making: A Comprehensive Treatise

The first patterns were probably made of clay or of similar material, and were models Of those rude bronze castings that have been found in ancient ruins. At a later period wax was employed for patterns which represented the more artistic bronze articles. In both these methods the models were usually destroyed in the process Of moulding, and their consequent disappearance, in conjunction with the then existent limited knowledge of bronze found ing, made the castings rare and valuable.
