Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book begins in the vicinity of the city of Cures in the Sabine country amidst an ancient forest and the Temple of Ceres, where Numa, the book's main character, has been raised by the chief priest Tullus as his son, though in secret, for Numa is actually the son of Pompilius, prince of the Sabine royal blood. After describing the events of Numa's childhood and adolescence, and a festival in honor of Ceres, the author recounts Numa's discovery that he is not Tullus' son and provides the tragic story of his real parents' deaths, including the abduction of the Sabine women and the subsequent war between the Romans and the Sabines. The book continues with Numa's departure from the temple for Rome, where he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Hersilia, daughter of the Roman king Romulus. Through Numa's experiences, the author explores themes of family, identity, duty, love, and war in ancient Rome and the significance of these concepts in the broader context of Roman history and literature.
