Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a Preliminary Report on a journey of archaeological and topographical exploration in Chinese Turkestan undertaken by the author. The author was sent on a year's special duty, for the purpose of archaeological explorations in the southern portion of Chinese Turkestan and particularly in the region of Khotan. The author was tasked with providing a detailed account of these explorations and of the antiquarian and epigraphical discoveries, which include Buddhist texts in early Prakrit, manuscripts and other remains thought to have been obtained from ancient sites near Khotan and in the neighbouring portions of the Taklamakan desert. The author planned to investigate these discoveries in the light of on-the-ground research, and to assess the critical study of Khotan antiquities, which had been largely impeded by the lack of reliable information about the exact origin of the finds or the character of the ruined sites which were supposed to have furnished them. The author also hoped to utilise the opportunity to gather general geographical data on the region, and the book includes information on topography, the mapping of previously unexplored areas, and the triangulation of rivers and mountain ranges. The book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of Chinese history and culture, Buddhism, and the history of Central Asia, with particular relevance to academics specialising in archaeology, epigraphy, history, and philology. The insights provided in this book will be of great significance in advancing our understanding of the region's past.
