Excerpt from The American Legion Monthly, Vol. 4: January 1928
No transcontinental railways or highways existed then, and hun dreds of thousands of square miles of the Southwest were totally unknown. What few trails had been cut across the continent were constantly harassed by hostile Indians. It was commonly supposed that beyond the Mississippi extended a vast Sahara which could not be traversed by mules, horses or oxen. Congress believed that communication would be greatly facilitated by the use of camels and in 1854 appropriated the money for their importation.

The book explores the interplay between the camels, their handlers, and the indigenous cultures they encountered, shedding light on the complexities of cross-cultural interactions in a time of westward expansion. Through detailed accounts of the Camel Corps' operations, the author provides a unique perspective on the challenges and ingenuity involved in maintaining supply lines and exploring unknown territories in the 19th century.
