Excerpt from Alatypes, or Stenotypography: A System of Condensed Printing, Together With the Elements of Alagraphy or Syllabic Short-Hand
Developing slowly through the ages into a crude phonetic form, borrowed and adapted by the Phenicians, subsequently cultivated and refined by that wonderful people, the Greeks, and spread by Roman conquest throughout Western Europe, this alphabet has come to be our heritage, but so neg lected and overgrown with multiplied errors and inconsistencies that they present a very serious obstacle to the acquisition of ele mentary knowledge. The necessary first steps in the pathway of learning are made so difficult, as to require years to accomplish, instead of the weeks or months only which would be necessary were these impediments removed, thereby condemning multitudes to illiteracy.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a scientific alphabet designed for English language printing and writing. This new system, which the author calls "stenotypography," contains characters that more closely resemble the sounds they represent than the current Roman alphabet. The author posits that if this new alphabet were adopted, the savings from reduced printing and learning costs would be immense, and additionally that the easier acquisition of the language would spread literacy and knowledge. The author suggests the new alphabet could also be used to mark condensed expressions in existing printed works.
