It will be Observed that certain grammatical terms and distinctions are brought forward in these pages, but it is important to note that only those matters Of grammar are introduced which are most inseparably related to the correct or the intelligent use Of language. The aim Of the student Of this book is not the learning Of a science, but the com mand Of an art. Composition is synthetic, creative, expressive, flowing. In the composition work, therefore, it is essential to keep down to a minimum the number Of technical terms introduced, since the attitude of mind required for the analysis and discrimination belonging to the grammatical point of view might hinder the child's advance in the art he is studying.
