Geboren am 14.08.1771 in Edinburgh; gestorben am 21.09.1832 in Abbotsford. Walter Scott war der Sohn eines Anwalts und verbrachte seine Kindheit auf dem Landgut seines Großvaters. Er besuchte eine Schule in Edinburgh, wo er auch studierte. Dort war er ab 1792 Gerichtssekretär. Ab 1799 war er Sheriff von Selkirk. Von seinen Einkünften baute er das gotische Schloß Abbotsford, wo er lebte und schrieb.
