For greater convenience the bulky first volume of the German original has been split into three volumes in this Translation; but, to facilitate reference and comparison, the sections through out the series will be numbered consecutively as in the original.
Some of the Illustrations have been printed apart; and, at the author's request, use has been made of his corrections and supplementary notes to the French edition.
