Aprés qu'henri eut de nouveau renforcé son armée dans la haute-italie et dévasté plusieurs possessions de Mathilde, il commença, après la Pâque de 1090, à assiéger Mantoue, princi pale forteresse de cette princesse. L'empereur se proposait de la prendre par la famine, mais au bout de onze mois, c'est - à-dire au mois d'avril 1091, elle fut livrée par trahison, et Henri y ins titus, comme il l'avait fait partout, un évêque intrus. La fortune favorisait v131blement 1 empereur. Déjà, pendant le siège de Man toue, il avait fait une diversion contre l'etat de l'église et avait obligé le pape Urbain à prendre la fuite; aussi, Clément (wibert) put-il rentrer à Rome (et trôner dans l'église de Saint - Pierre Quelques mois aprés, l'empereur vainquit de nouveau Mathilde dans la rencontre de Tricontai sur le territoire de Padoue, et£il s'empara de plusieurs autres forteresses. A cette même époque, c'est-à - dire aux mois de juillet et d'août 1091, la mort le délivre de ses ennemis les plus déclarés en Allemagne, l'abbé Guillaume d'hirsau et l'évêque Altmann de Passau. Au mois de décembre de cette même année, les évêques nouvellement élus, Cosmas de Prague et _wezel d'olmutz, vinrent à Mantoue pour recevoir d'henri l'investiture par l'anneau et la crosse. Ils avaient hé sité, ainsi que Wratislaw roi de Bohême et de Pologne pour savoir de quel côté ils se rangeraient. Mais la nouvelle des pro grès d'henri en Italie les déterminèrent à embrasser le schisme. A cette même époque l'antipape voulut aussi réunir un grand synode pour reconnaître son prétendu droit à la tiare.
