The epoch at which Arabian cultivation attained its meridian splendour, while the nations of Europe were enveloped in dark ness, cannot fail to catch the attention of the most careless ob server. Its situation too, in the midst of Goths and Celtiberians, is' no less remarkable. The Moors in Spain transmitted the torch of civilization from antiquity to modern ages, and yet the beneficial influence which they exerted on Europe can be but im perfectly developed, and is yet reluctantly acknowledged by the literary world. This ingrat1tude, as well as the historical. Ob scurity which gives birth to it, are both to he referred to the pe enlier character of Arabian literature, of which we shall now pro ceed to take a brief survey, endeavouring to trace its character from its history, and from both these to deduce its influence on modern Europe.
