The Marchioness left alone with the Serjeant, confides to him her secret. She loved Captain Robert, and was secretly married to him a year before he was killed During the impediments interposed by her rank and high station, she became the mother of Marie, and now, in order to conceal this, she entreats the Serjeant to assist her in bringing to a conclusion a marriage which will give her daughter a powerful support, and save her own reputation.
