This research note contains a number of papers originally designed at the 1988 Workshop on Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI). The papers describe significant research in this area and present results that have not appeared elsewhere. DAI is concerned with the co-operative solution of problems by a decentralized group of agents. The agents may range from simple processing elements to complex entities exhibiting rational behaviour. The papers describe architectures and languages for achieving co-operative problem solving in a distributed environment, and include several successful applications of DAI in manufacturing, information retrieval, and distributed sensing.
