Synopsis

This work describes new theoretical results obtained as part of a PhD dissertation at Computer Vision Lab, University of Maryland. The thesis provides a unified theoretical framework for the interpretation of visual motion. The early chapters of the thesis provide background information for the non-specialist and mathematical and implementational details are included in the appendices. Computational approaches are described for specific cases which are of practical significance. These include analytic solutions for the determination of shape and rigid motion of planar surfaces, curved surfaces and simple cases of accelerated motion and non-rigid motion. An important characteristic of the computational approach is a uniform representation scheme and a unified algorithm which is both flexible and extensible. The work aims to provide a basis for further investigations in both machine vision and human vision.
