In spite of its share of ups and downs, Nimes managed to keep a fair proportion of its artistic treasures some of the finest vestiges of Roman occupation are still standing, notwithstanding frequent Barbarian inva sions, and the oft misplaced zeal of restoring architects. Some tutelary deity, Diana herself perhaps, who had her temple here miraculously protected it, and so it has remained the great Latin town of the South of France.
