Synopsis

Excerpt from Diffraction in Inhomogeneous Media

This theory differs from ordinary geometrical optics by the inclusion of certain additional rays called diffracted rays and others called complex or imaginary rays. The former are associated with the boundaries or discontinuities of the medium while the latter are associated with refraction shadows which occur in the absence of boundaries. In addition to characterizing these new rays, the theory also provides a method for calculating the field associated with them.
