The reader must suppose nearly three months to have intervened between the close of our last volume and the period at which we resume our tale. During this lapse Vernon had been so fully occupied in providing for the wants of the various parties of Indians, borderers, and hun ters, who were continually pouring ih - for both Martin and Sure Scent had vigorously employed themselves in his absence to perform the parts allotted to them - that he had been perfectly unable to attend to the instruction of the Mohawk, and Maria in consequence had become his teacher.
