Excerpt from The Ancient Lyre: A Collection of Old, New and Original Church Music; Under the Approbation of the Professional Music Society in Boston
Many of the old tunes in the work were composed by persons of good natural talents, but without much knowledge of harmony. Agreeable melo dies, therefore, would have imperfect subordinate parts. These have been carefully revised. Many 'of the old tunes, also, composed by distinguished masters, having been altered without good authority, the Editor has restored to their original form.
With these remarks, the Editor commits the work to the impartial judgment of the public. Boston, Jan. 1843.
