Naturgemäfs stellt sich, namentlich bei der Beurtheilung des Werde und Lebensganges eines Gelehrten, zunächst die Frage auf welche Ein flüsse auf ihn eingewirkt haben mögen? Nicht selten wird solchen äufseren Einflüssen viel zu viel Gewicht beigemessen, und es werden Dinge aus dem Verborgenen hervorgeholt, bei denen man sich wirklich wundern mufs, wie sie zur Erklärung dieser oder jener Arbeits und Studienrichtung, oder einer ausgezeichneten Fähigkeit des Betrefi'enden hatten herangezogen werden können. Begabungen und Fähigkeiten sind wie Charaktereigenschafien an geboren. Menschen, die sie in hervorragender Weise in ihrer ererbten Organisation besitzen, finden und schreiten ihre eigenen Wege, und ein solcher war Virchow. Menschen, denen sie mangeln, wird auch der bedeutendste Lehrer und Erzieher sie nicht geben oder ersetzen können. Immerhin aber ist nicht zu leugnen, dars von Natur begabte Menschen durch ihresgleichen lebhaft angezogen, angeregt und auf bestimmte Forschungswege gelenkt werden können, auf denen sie dann weiter, immer aber in ihrer Eigenart, wandeln.
