Synopsis

Excerpt from The Howell Method of Duplicate Whist for Pairs: With the Latest Approved Methods of Scoring Under the Multiple and Improved Match Systems

A moment's scrutiny of the schedule will make it clear that every pair meets every other pair just once. Another result, however, still more important than this, is obtained by the method of arrangementof players and deals, namely that every pair over-plays an equal number of hands with every other pair. The given schedule may be transposed so as to appear thus: Hence, Pair No. 8 over-plays the north and south hands of Deals Nos. 4, 6 and 7 with Pair No. 1; Deals Nos. I, 5 and 7 with Pair No. 2, and so on, or three deals With every other pair and the same thing is true of the over-play of deals by every other couple of pairs. This arrangement compares the play of pairs. It is sometimes called the Opposition of players, and is an element of prime importance in multi-table duplicate whist that is frequently overlooked by schedule makers. In this respect the present schedules are as nearly as possible perfect.

The indicating cards are supplied for any number of pairs from four to thirty. For more than thirty pairs the number of deals required is unwieldy; while, indeed, very few clubs will ever have so large an attendance in a duplicate game.
