The following selections from Lessing's prose writ ings are designed to present a few Specimens Of his multifarious activity as fabulist, literary and dramatic critic, philosopher and theologian. So much of Les sing's best writing consists of fragmentary efiusions, or is so entangled with references to authors and charac ters long since consigned to oblivion, that it is some what difficult to present extended extracts complete and intelligible in themselves. His views on art as set forth in the Laokoon, his attainments as a classical scholar, archaeologist and antiquarian, his eminence as poet and dramatist, must be discovered by a further perusal of his works, to which this volume may serve as a slight introduction. To this end frequent bibliographical references have been embodied in the notes for the benefit of teachers as well as students.
