Excerpt from Ludlow and Ludlow Castle: Including Plan of Town and Plan of Castle
When the Doomsday Survey was made in 1085, no reference to either Ludlow or Ludlow Castle was included in the record, nor was any mention made Of Dinham or Dinan, an earlier name by which town and Castle were known. This omission should not be taken as conclusive evidence that a castle or town did not exist prior to this date, but it may be accepted as satisfactory witness to the absence of a castle, Church and habitation at that date, more especially when taken in conjunction with the consideration that other places, for example Bromfield, in the immediate vicinity, are mentioned and noted.
It must, however, be borne in mind that in this part of England the Danes had made continual raids up the Severn and into the valley Of the Teme, destroying and burning, pillaging and looting towns and villages, whether they Offered resistence or not, and Doomsday describes whole districts as being waste and deserted which had been formerly inhabited and cultivated.
