One of the simplest and most beautiful mural decorations of the so-called second style is afforded by the paintings of a room belonging to a house of late Republican date discovered about the middle of last century in the old Via Graziosa on the Esquiline, and removed to the Library of the Vatican. Here the upper part of the wall-surface is treated as a clerestory, between the pilasters of which we see a continuous landscape enlivened by scenes from the Odyssey.
