The kneeling statue (a strikingly true likeness, sculptured by Mr. F. Pomeroy, seems instinct with the spirit of prayer, the source whence the Bishop drew the strength in which he accomplished his life's work. This biography has been written in the hope that it may inspire others to imitate his self-surrender 'for the advancement of true religion and useful learning, for the service of God and of their Country.' I hope that the statue and the book may interpret one another; and that, as the former will ever show what manner of man George Ridding was, so the latter may preserve the memory of his character and of the work which God enabled him to do.

I desire to render my grateful thanks to the numerous friends who have so kindly assisted me in the compilation of this book most of their names are mentioned in its chapters.
