I owe Dr. Hamann a debt of thanks for allowing me to work upon the basis of his labours. In revising his notes I have been guided, in additions or omissions, by my sense of what: an English reader would find difficult or easy, and have kept before me as a model the style of annotation customary in well-edited Greek and Latin books. The Introduction I have confined within narrower limits, so as to make it more strictly subordinate to the matter in hand.

To the books mentioned by Dr. Hamann, I may add Sime's Lessing; his Life and Writings' (london, the translation by Ellen Frothingham, at once freer and more accurate than the other two; and Murray's History of Greek Sculpture.' I have inserted references to Eve's School German Grammar,' and Lange's 'german Method' (clarendon Press).

My best thanks are due to Mr. W. E. Mullins for reading the proofs and making many valuable and suggestive criticisms.
