Two cats found a cheese: they could not agree. To terminate the dispute they consented to refer to a monkey. The arbitrator accepts the office, he produces a balance, and puts a piece of the disputed cheese into each scale.
Let us see, said he, gravely; this piece weighs more than the other; I must eat some of it to reduce them both to an equal weight. Through this monkey's trick the Opposite scale became the heaviest; this furnished to our conscientious judge a new reason for a second mouthful.
Hold, hold, said the two cats, give us each his part and we shall be satisfied. If you are satisfied, said the monkey, justice is not. A complicated case like this cannot be determined so quickly; on which he bit, first one piece and then the other.
The cats, seeing their cheese diminish, beg the arbitrator not to give himself any more trouble; but to give them back what remains.
