Excerpt from Applied Entomology in Canada, Its Rise and Progress
In passing, mention should be made of the entomological work of Mr. J. R. Anderson, formerly Deputy Minister of Agriculture, who has always been a keen observer and has assisted in the development of applied entomology in the Pro vince. His bulletin on Farmers' Fees and Their Remedies, published in 1908, has done much to create an intelligent interest in the subject of insect pests in the province.

This book explores the genesis of practical entomology in Canada, tracing the development of applied pest control from its humble beginnings in the 19th century to the establishment of specialized government services in the early 20th century. It chronicles the efforts of pioneering entomologists like William Saunders and James Fletcher, who laid the foundations for the scientific management of insect pests in agriculture and forestry. The author analyzes how government recognition of the need to control crop-damaging insects led to the establishment of the Dominion Entomological Service in 1884 and discusses the subsequent expansion of entomological work in the provinces. By highlighting the contributions of entomologists, this book shows how the field of applied entomology transitioned from a curiosity-driven pursuit to a vital component of modern agriculture, ensuring a food-secure future for Canada.
