Excerpt from Illinois Loess, Variations in Its Properties and Distribution: A Pedologic Interpretation
In Iowa the soils derived from loess seem to occur in somewhat similar belts. Browns recognized that the character of the soils varied with the character of the loess, and divided the loess into three groups, partly on the basis of origin and partly on the thickness of the loess deposit. He described the Marshall series as occurring along Missouri river, where the loess is thickest, and the Edina, a Planosol, as occurring farther back from the river, where the loess is thinner.
