Montreal, during the French rule, was nominally in charge of local governors, but was really, like the other towns and villages, under the'co-utro-l of the Council and Intendent at Quebec. Of these local French governors there were sixteen, and the names of some are still preserved in the nomenclature of our streets, such as Maisonneuve, Berthe-lot, Lemoine, Vaudreuil and others. After the conquest, for a brief period, the city was under direct military.
