C'est une vérité généralement admise, qu'on ne peut bien posséder les théories peu nombreuses, mais fé condes, qui constituent la Mécanique rationnelle, si l'on n'en a fait des applications attentives et variées aussi a-t-on publié en France et à l'étranger plusieurs recueils de problèmes de Mécanique qui ont rendu d'incontestables services et obtenu un légitime succès. Le dois dire un mot sur ceux de ces Ouvrages qui sont le plus connus chez nous, et expliquer dans quel but je viens présenter au public studieux un nouveau Livre sur le même sujet. Les Recueils de M. William Walton et du P. Jullien sont très-soignés et très-riches; mais cette richesse même me semble avoir un double inconvénient: l'étudiant n'a pas le temps de porter son attention sur tous les exercices relatifs à un même sujet et hésite sur le choix qu'il doit faire; puis, pour ne pas avoir un livre trop volumineux, on a dû choisir rnérac3.
