Although Book Five contains all the instructional and practice materials for a complete year's course in arithmetic, some schools desire the added advantages obtained from the use of a work-book. For such schools the authors have prepared a work-book1 following the same teaching sequence as Book Five.

The work-book contains twenty self-testing Drills that parallel those in the text in sequence of introduction of new topics. The work-book also contains remedial practice and reteaching lessons, conveniently organized to provide fresh practice on the funda mentals whenever needed throughout the year. A self-help Chart enables each pupil to select, on the basis of his performance on each self-testing Drill, the remedial practice and reteaching suited to his individual needs at that specific time. Thus the work-book individualizes the remedial work for each pupil, places the re Sponsibility for improvement on him, and at the same time enables the teacher to watch and direct each pupil's progress without de voting an undue amount of time to him at the expense of the others.
