IT will be the province of this essay to ascertain the sources from which the surplus of Life Assur ance Societies arises; to state the usual methods that have been adopted for its division; and to give, illustrated by arithmetical processes, an intelligible explanation of the Contribution Plan recently adopt ed by a considerable number of the American Com panics. In furtherance of this design we deem it essential to call the attention of the reader to the fundamental principles upon which Mutual Life Assurance Societies are founded.
