I made thirty-51x of'these trips: seventy-two drives in all. I think I could still rehearse every smallest incident of every _single one of themf With all their weirdness, with all their sometimes dangerous adventure - most of them were made at night, and with hardly ever any regard being paid to the weather or to the state of the roads-they stand out in the vast array of memorable triﬂes that con stitute the story of my life as among the most memorable ones. Seven drives seem, as it were, lifted above the mass of others as worthy to be described in some detail - _as not too trivial to detain for an hour or so a patient reader's kind attention. L Not that the others lack in interest for myself; but there is little in them of that mildly dramatic, stirring quality which might perhaps make their recital deserving of being heard beyond my own frugal fireside.

About the Author

Frederick Philip Grove was a Canadian author and translator best known for his fictional works exploring the Canadian west. Born in Germany as Felix Paul Greve, Grove emigrated to Canada as an adult following his imprisonment for fraud in 1903 and a self-imposed exile from Germany from 1904-1906. Settling in Manitoba, Grove formally changed his name and undertook a series of teaching positions in rural areas before devoting himself to writing full time starting in the early 1920s. Among Grove s most memorable works are Fruits of the Earth, Settlers of the Marsh, and A Search for America. Grove died in Ontario in 1948 after suffering a stroke in 1946.
