Synopsis

Excerpt from Der Zwerg Nase: Märchen

Of the novelist, H. Clauren, who was then at the height of his somewhat short-lived popularity. This work was received with the greatest favor. Studies of actual life were continued in the second part of the 9)lemoiren be8 @0tau, and also in a number of separate tales, of which the latest and perhaps the best is ®aß %ilb be6 Raiferß. Baufi's rapidly growing fame was crowned by Sichtenftein, an historical novel, which, in spite of some errors and the lack of character - delineation, showed the same good qualities that had marked his other works. As soon as 8id)tenftcin was finished, Hauff found that his income from his writings would enable him to give up his position as tutor and visit the principal cities of Germany. He was everywhere re ceived with enthusiasm, and made many good friends, especially in Berlin. His untimely death was keenly felt by the literary world, which had come to regard him as the coming Walter Scott of Germany: shortly before his death he had been collecting materials for a second historical novel, which would probably have surpassed the first. Although Hauff may be considered as belonging to the Ro mantic school, he had but little of the vagueness and un healthy mysticism that characterized most Romantic au thors: all that he wrote is clear, precise, and full of life; while hrs unusual powers of observation and description, his easy style, his delicate humor, and his irresistible grace make him one of the most pleasing figures in German literature.
