Synopsis

Excerpt from Church Reform

It is therefore most desirable, in the opinion of all who believe that the National Church system can be made, by careful and judicious reforms, into the most potent instrument for promoting God's truth and the highest well-being of the people that the human mind has ever been able to imagine or conceive, that we should utilize the interval of calmness that precedes the storm of controversy, by embarking upon the fullest dis cussion and the freest consideration of the relative advan tages of the two opposite policies of Disestablishment and Reform. It is better that discussions should be held now, at a time when they can be carried on with perfect freedom, than that they should be postponed to the time when the warring interests of rival sections will be only too likely to persuade fighting politicians to shut the door against reason and argument, and deafen their ears to everything but that which may serve to promote the victory of the party to which they belong.

We therefore offer this volume to the public at the present time in the hope that it may stimulate a contro troversy that will draw the attention of the public to the real character of the coming issue. We offer it in the belief that the result of such a controversy will be to create a powerful and increasing sentiment in favour of Reform; and we offer it also in the belief that its perusal will be likely to beget an acknowledgment from circles at present Liberationist, that the policy of Church Re form, as explained in the chapters of this volume, agrees far more truly with the principle of religious equality, is far more likely to stimulate an active development of the sublime principles of Christianity, is far better calculated to break down the barriers of class exclusiveness, and to promote in their place brotherhood, association, union, and sympathy, and has consequently far greater claims upon the support and approval of the nation, than has the wanton, reckless, and destructive policy contained in the proposals of the Abolitionists.
