In this revealing study, Larry Hirschhorn examines the rituals, or social defenses, organizations develop to cope with change. Using extended ease studies from offices, factories, and social services, he describes why these often irrational practices that fragment and injure individuals within the workplace exist, how they operate, and how they can be reshaped to enhance people's work experience.

"" The Workplace Within" is a deeply ambitious book. It addresses practical human problems in organizations, drawing on solid case data, and at the same time it raises questions at a broad philosophical and policy level about good organizations, how to go beyond social defenses, and the scope of changes required in our political economy to build developmental work cultures... a major contribution toward understanding the felt experience of work in post industrial society... most importantly it represents a methodological breakthrough in that it tells the stories - successful and failed of organization consulting as a 'applied clinical' practice." -- J.M. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). As you can see from the photos, the covers of this book are in excellent condition, with no wear and no soiling. The interior of the book is in very good shape. The pages are free of any soiling (as are the page edges and inside covers). They have a few minor imperfections. There's one thin, very light impression off the outer edge of around 75 pages (not reaching the print). It is so small and light that I don't think most sellers would feel it necessary to mention. The other imperfection is a 3/8th inch tear off the top edge of two consecutive pages. The pages are nicely bright, not toned. There is no writing of any kind on any of the pages. There are no attachments. It is NOT ex-library. There is one marking, a small stamp of the previous owner (Rabbi, scholar and psychoanalyst Alan W. Miller) at the top corner of the front free end paper. The book is square, straight, and very solidly bound from cover to cover. You can see the dust jacket in the first three photos. It is perfectly clean. It has a little scuffing at the spine ends and there's a 1/2 inch tear off the top edge of the rear cover. The jacket is NOT price-clipped. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. Seller Inventory # 002042
