Synopsis

A beautifully produced collection of paintings from various artists around the world to follow the enormous success of Tolkien’s World.

Following on from the success of Tolkien’s World, this new collection of stunning illustrations inspired by the work of J R R Tolkien promises to be as beautiful as its predecessor.

The volume includes paintings by artists from all over the world, both famous and unknown — Alan Lee, renowned for his atmospheric interpretations of folklore and legend, and of course for his stunning illustrations for The Lord of the Rings; John Howe’s powerful representations of the landscapes and peoples of Middle-earth; Ted Nasmith’s classically accurate and dramatic pictures; and Inger Edelfeldt’s beautiful and unusual illustrations.

Realms of Tolkien also includes many gifted amateur artists from all around the globe, demonstrating the wealth and variety of artwork that the writings of J R R Tolkien have inspired. Also featured in this volume is the Dutch artist Cor Blok, whose work was much admired by Tolkien himself.

In full colour throughout, Realms of Tolkien is a perfect gift book for Tolkien fans of all ages, and a work of art in itself. Each picture is accompanied by a page of text from the relevant passage in Tolkien’s fiction, describing the scene the artist has chosen to depict. The artists themselves have also each contributed a piece about the inspiration and influence J R R Tolkien has been for them: a fitting pictorial tribute to the master of modern fantasy.

'Realms of Tolkien 'is a celebration of Tolkien's imagination and the ingenuity of artists like Alan Lee, John Howe and Ted Nasmith who choose to realise his fantasy – every one of the 58 paintings offers a unique interpretation of Tolkien's realm, while retaining that familiar quality that makes it undeniably 'Tolkien'. Twenty new and familiar Tolkien artists are represented in this fabulous volume, breathing an extraordinary variety of life into 58 different scenes, each of which is accompanied by the appropriate passage from 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings'.
