Synopsis
Excerpt from The Third Report of the Manchester Model Secular School, January, 1859
Another successful attempt to popularise an important subject. - Papers for. The Schoolmaster.
The work under notice is On a novel subject, one Commonly supposed to'be too abstruse to be' understood yet here it is simplified in so masterly a manner, that it cannot but be comprehensible to any painstaking reader. A great recommendation to this book is the clearness and precision of its language. T The chapters on the 'price of Labour,' 'wages,' and 'strikes,' are excellent. We beg to recommend it very strongly to all schoolmasters, and to all who feel interested in the somewhat loosely understood subject Of Social Economy. Derby and Chesterfield Reporter.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book scrutinises the educational landscape of the Victorian era, focusing on the Manchester Model Secular School. Founded in 1853-4, this institution provided a free education for the impoverished children of Manchester, many of whom worked as street vendors or in factories at a tender age. The author explores the school's curriculum, which included practical knowledge such as domestic economy, geography, physiology, and social economy. The author argues that the school's focus on secular education was crucial, as it allowed for instruction that was both impartial and accessible to children from diverse religious backgrounds. Despite its success, the school faced financial difficulties and was denied state funding due to its secular nature. The author argues that the school's exclusion from state funding reflects the prevailing social and religious attitudes of the time, which prioritised religious instruction in education. The book concludes by highlighting the significance of the Manchester Model Secular School as a pioneering institution that challenged the dominance of religious education and provided a valuable service to the underprivileged children of Manchester.
