The introduction assumes a general knowledge of Les sing's life and times, such as any one of the popular English biographies of Lessing would furnish. In referring to the various opinions of the critics on the disputed points of the drama, I have avoided exact citations, because I have had in mind the general point of view taken by them, rather than any individual passages.
