Synopsis

Excerpt from Terrestrial Atmospheric Absorption of the Photographic Rays of Light

Owing to the ever changing condition of our atmosphere, and to the want Of definite information as to its density at different heights for variations in temperature and pressure, the complete solution of the problem of determining the path of a ray of star-light has not yet been accomplished.

Many different expressions have been deduced by as many different investigators for the law Of atmospheric refraction, and in all of these, quantities Of a more or less empirical char acter have been so introduced that the assumed law satisfied the Observed data.

The determination Of the amount Of star-light lost to us during its transmission through our atmosphere seems to be a still more complicated problem. In the case of refraction, Observation seems to Show that the relative humidity, for in stance, can be almost wholly neglected SO far as its effect upon the refraction is concerned. The same may be said Of other causes which do not affect refraction but which do tend to diminish the final amount of light which would otherwise be received.
