Synopsis

Excerpt from The Influence of Environment Upon the Composition of the Sugar Beet, 1902: Including a Study of Irrigated Sections

In connection with this study, I desire to make careful chemical and physical analyses of the soils of the plats used for the growing of the beets. I therefore ask that you take a representative sample of the soil and subsoil of the plat on which you grow the N o. 8238 seed during the present year. After getting a representative sample reduce it in size by quartering or otherwise so as to secure a representative subsample weighing not more than 4 pounds, and send it, under the inclosed frank, by mail to my address.

In sending the sample of soil in accordance with the above instructions, do not forget to send a history of the plat so far as known. Complete cultural and meteoro logical data, in collaboration with the Weather Bureau, should be kept and forwarded with the samples. F ranks for forwarding the samples and full instructions for sampling and harvesting will be sent later. It is earnestly requested that frequent analyses be made at the station, so that the results of those analyses can be com pared with those which are made of the beets sent here.
