In justice to my father I am bound to say with respect to this pronouncement, that he undoubtedly would have bought rare editions if he had had the money, and would have sold them if he could have found a customer. As to what he meant by Manuscripts authenticated I have not even now the slightest idea, and I doubt if he had. He had a weakness for ﬂourishes Of this sort, and, I believe, some times spoke of himself as a bibliographer.
